Authorities stated they were alerted by a resident who noticed a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored substance

Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.

A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
