Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
